The Market+ project is situated in Sant’Elena, the easternmost part of the main Venetian island group. It’s designed with the revitalization project for the ACTV docks in mind. The area is currently a maintenance and repair hub for the Venetian public transport system. Three existing hangars have been redesigned to accommodate new functions and act as the central part of the future housing development.

By addition and subtraction of walls and volumes the old industrial hangars have been refurbished into modern facilities with all-round use possibilities. As Sant’Elena is a tourist free district of Venice, we tried to keep it that way, organizing the functions of the buildings for people who live in an area that severely lacks infrastructure. A new pedestrian bridge is also planned to connect Sant’elena with San Pietro di Castello.

Site Plan
Hangar 01 has been turned into a market and concert hall with a large water basin for either a floating market or a floating stage. The basin was created by digging into the ground and flooding the hole via the canal next to it. The goal was to achieve a similar atmosphere as the one that can be experienced at the „water halls“ of the Arsenale. The lower half of the outer walls have all except one been demolished to connect the inner space with the exterior. Sliding panels can be used to close the openings in these walls. Additionally, a wooden stand has been installed that can be lifted under the roof to make space for the market stands or be used as a stand for events.

Hangar 02 is now a multipurpose building that can be used as a flea market, lecture hall or concert hall. The existing hangar consisted only of the load bearing skeletal structure and one wall. By adding three new walls the hangar was closed and got a new highlight with its big pivotal doors that can open up both main facades. By opening the doors we can connect the hangar with the exterior and create a passage through it. On one side it opens to the big ramp in the focal point of all three halls. An existing ramp to the sea has been redesigned by adding steps on the sides and placing a floating stand in front of it. This ramp is the central point of the Market+ area that acts similar to the Piazza del Campo in Siena. It can be used for outdoor events like an open-air cinema or an open-air concert venue.

Hangar 03 has been turned into the service point of the development. It houses a big restaurant and office space, restrooms and a storage area for the other hangars. The restaurant opens up to its patio and to the plaza and can also be used as an open kitchen or party room. The open kitchen is especially interesting as it correlates to the food market. The office space is used by the administration and the storage areas can be used for storing stands or the event equipment.
